LINCOLN

Lincoln rushed through his front entry door, trying to keep Laura happy. She was stressed due to all this wedding planning and had been on edge for weeks now. Lincoln wished they would have done what he suggested, flying off to a little resort in Mexico and saying their vows on a beach with only their families and close friends.

Instead, she planned this elaborate day with nearly two-hundred guests to witness their special moment. To Lincoln, it was nothing more than a waste of money.

“I’m home,” he called. The air smelled of Thanksgiving.

“I’m in the kitchen,” Laura called.

Two place settings decorated the table. Laura wore large, red oven mitts and pulled a pan from the oven. “I made us dinner.”

“You never cook.”

“I thought I’d start. We are going to be married in three days.”

Lincoln laughed. “You’re changing already? Everyone says that doesn’t happen until after the wedding.”

“Don’t you like a home cooked meal?”

“I’m not complaining…It’s just…different.”

Laura pulled out one of the chairs. “Have a seat. Did your brother agree to let your friend stay with him?”

“Yeah. He seems to like her. He was more charming than usual. I haven’t seen him smile that much before. He invited her to my bachelor party tomorrow.”

“Your bachelor party? I thought that was for men only.”

Lincoln shrugged. “It was actually just for Mason and me, but Mila’s a good friend. I’ve never been one to follow tradition, anyway.”

“I just thought it was some brother bonding time.” Laura placed a covered pan on the table and sat down across from Lincoln. “What are you doing, anyway?”

Lincoln tilted his chin, realizing that she didn’t know. She hadn’t asked him during the months Mason had been planning things. “We’re going skydiving in the morning, to the hot springs swimming around lunch…then sneaking into the country club at night.”

“Skydiving? Who’d want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”

“Oh, come on. I’ve been asking you to go with me for a year now. I wanted to mark a few things off my bucket list before I start a family.”

Laura lifted the cover off the pan, allowing a plume of steam to escape. She reached in with a knife and cut a lightly colored chunk of meat. Attempting to pull out a slice, it fell apart, splashing juices out of the pan. Laura reached in with a spoon and scooped out some meat and plopped it on Lincoln’s plate. “What’s this?”

“Turkey.”

“It looks more like…” bad meatloaf? He bit his tongue. “It looks delicious. Thanks for making it.” While he waited until Laura served herself, he wondered what the emergency with the caterer was. Why were things strangely casual when he had to rush home to solve a problem?

Lincoln listened to Laura recount her day, shopping at a handful of stores for last minute decorations he didn’t think they needed, but probably cost them more than they could afford. Of the final fitting of her wedding dress, saying that she felt like a princess. Lincoln’s mind wandered to Mila and Mason.
